A book project on Patti Smith’s first Swiss concert in the Rote Fabrik, 1976, which marks the start of recognition of punk in Switzerland. The book presentation took place on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, from 5 p.m. to midnight at X-tra, where on the same day, Patti Smith performed at a (sold-out) concert.
“Altogether, Dominik Bachmann was involved with the project for three and a half years. What began with just a few photos turned into an adventurous journey into the past, and it’s astounding how many facets there were to that one evening in October 1976.” Musikzeitung Loop, July 8, 2025
“But the heart of the book is a lengthy photo series with images from the concert.” Musikzeitung Loop, July 8, 2025
“How Patti Smith spat Zurich awake.” St Galler Tagblatt, July 8, 2025
“With lyrics, noise, and lasciviousness, the American icon smashed gender roles and cultural borders. A new book documents the historical concert from October 12, 1976, at the Rote Fabrik in Zurich.” Aargauer Zeitung, July 19, 2025
“It’s a journey back to 1976 when Patti Smith and her band performed at the Rote Fabrik in Zurich. The photo book shows not only moments on stage, but also scenes of daily life, from the hotel to backstage. Particularly impressive: the photos capture the energy and radicality that Smith brought to Zurich at the time. Many of the photos published here have not been seen before.” Aargauer Zeitung, July 19, 2025
“Half a century after Smith’s performance at the Rote Fabrik, graphic designer Dominik Bachmann delved into his uncle’s archive and brought to light the photos that were taken that evening.” NZZ, July 20, 2025
“Nearly fifty years after her first appearance in Zurich, her belief that music can change the world lives on—in her performance, in her words, in her songs, in the photographs by Eric Bachmann. And in his nephew’s book, which lovingly captures her Swiss debut in 1976 on its beautifully designed pages.” SRF, July 23, 2025
“The happenings are documented in the newly published book Patti Smith Group, Live in Zurich, October 1976. There, you also find out that the tear gas incident has been eternalized on the soundtrack of a bootleg tape.” Tages Anzeiger, July 24, 2025
